Why Sealing Granite Countertops Is Important

Granite is a sturdy and long-lasting material that is resistant to moisture. Although it doesn’t necessarily need to be sealed when used as a countertop, it is recommended to do so in order to maintain its beauty for many years. Sealing granite is important because it is porous and can easily be stained by liquids and oils, such as grape juice and wine.

Applying a sealant at least once every five years can prevent staining and also protect the granite from etching caused by acidic foods and cleaners like lemon juice. Sealing granite countertops makes them easier to clean and more hygienic, reducing the need for harsh chemicals, and preventing the growth of bacteria that can hide in the porous surface.

It is not advisable to use cleaning products containing bleach, ammonia, or acids for cleaning granite. However, mild soap, water, and countertop cleaning solutions can be used for cleaning.

The frequency of sealing granite may vary depending on the porosity of the piece. To check if sealing is needed, pour water on the countertop and observe if it beads or soaks in. If the water beads, sealing is not required, but if it soaks in, sealing is recommended.
